Specification and Implementation of Multicast Congestion Control Stair Protocol: Use Case with Multimedia Ubiquitous Networks

2008

Ubiquitous and efficient multicast data delivery service is essential to the success of large-scale group communication applications. In this framework, congestion control through ubiquitous networks is a hot topic for multicast real time protocols. In this paper, authors present specification and implementation of simulate TCP's AIMD with rate-based (STAIR), a multicast congestion control mechanism. Authors have enhanced this approach because they have modeled it using Unified Modeling Language with real time extensions (UML-RT) as a formal specification tool. More to the point point, they introduce a multimedia ubiquitous network which they have used as a reference model to promote their …

Notice of Violation of IEEE Publication Principles: Enhanced P2P Services Providing Multimedia Content

2006

[This paper has been withdrawn by the publisher]Traditional peer-to-peer (P2P) services provide only basic searching facilities, based on unique identifiers or small sets of keywords. Unfortunately, this approach is very inadequate and inefficient when a huge amount of multimedia resources is shared. In this paper, we present an original image and video sharing system, in which a user is able to interactively search interesting resources by means of content-based image and video retrieval techniques. In order to limit the network traffic cost, maximizing the usefulness of each peer contacted in the query process, we also propose the adoption of an adaptive overlay routing algorithm, exploit…

The value of a network in the digital era: insights about Doctor Chat case study

2017

Networks are ubiquitous in our lives in their social, physical, and digital forms. A growing number of firms today rely entirely on networking and lack a physical location or material infrastructure; they are, so to speak, 'liquid'. Through a theoretical analysis and its application to the case of Doctor Chat mobile app, this paper aims to analyse the fundamental laws of networks and to answer the following questions: 1) are the traditional methods to estimate the network value still valid in the current digital age and in particular for mobile applications?; 2) how do the laws of networks work when networks expand? We conclude with some suggestions for a research agenda in order to inspire…

Tracking control of network distributed systems in presence of variable time delay and loss of information

2006

This paper deals with the control of network distributed systems which has been at the centre of interest in a wide area of research in the last few year. The control of such systems is very difficult because the communication networks inevitably introduce variable time delays and possible lost of samples. In particular, it is proposed an extension of the approach, derived in the contest of the optimal stochastic regulator problem [1], [2], to the remote tracking problem considering a distributed control system in which the signals from the transducers to the controller and from the controller to the actuator are transmitted through a communication network with variable delays and possible …

Video Streaming Distribution in VANETs

2011

Streaming applications will rapidly develop and contribute a significant amount of traffic in the near future. A problem, scarcely addressed so far, is how to distribute video streaming traffic from one source to all nodes in an urban vehicular network. This problem significantly differs from previous work on broadcast and multicast in ad hoc networks because of the highly dynamic topology of vehicular networks and the strict delay requirements of streaming applications. We present a solution for intervehicular communications, called Streaming Urban Video (SUV), that 1) is fully distributed and dynamically adapts to topology changes, and 2) leverages the characteristics of streaming applica…

Flows of information and meaning: a vocabulary approach to integrated thinking and reporting

2020

PurposeIntegrated reporting (IR) is increasingly becoming a practice useful not only for accountability but also for managerial purposes because of its potential role as a signifying practice for integrated thinking (IT). In this perspective, this paper aims to explore which of the objects that are represented in integrated reports provide materiality and common understanding to the concept of IT for its effective implementation within organizations.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is based on a vocabulary approach for interpreting the texts of integrated reports as systems of words that are able to provide meaning for a common understanding of the concept of IT. In particular, by focu…

WiSHFUL : enabling coordination solutions for managing heterogeneous wireless networks

2017

The paradigm shift toward the Internet of Things results in an increasing number of wireless applications being deployed. Since many of these applications contend for the same physical medium (i.e., the unlicensed ISM bands), there is a clear need for beyond-state-of-the-art solutions that coordinate medium access across heterogeneous wireless networks. Such solutions demand fine-grained control of each device and technology, which currently requires a substantial amount of effort given that the control APIs are different on each hardware platform, technology, and operating system. In this article an open architecture is proposed that overcomes this hurdle by providing unified programming i…

Supporting scalable video transmission in MANETs through distributed admission control mechanisms

2009

Emerging multimedia applications over mobile devices are becoming very popular, especially over infrastructure wireless networks such as cellular and WLANs. However, providing this kind of services over infrastructureless networks like ad hoc networks presents many additional problems. One of these problems is how to share resources fairly among the users involved. In this article we propose a QoS framework supporting scalable video streaming in mobile ad hoc networks based on distributed admission control and video traffic awareness. Our framework promotes fairness between video flows in terms of resource consumption. It also guarantees a significant reduction of the idle times experienced…

Network Reconfiguration Suitability for Scientific Applications

2008

This paper analyzes the communication pattern of several scientific applications and how they can make profit of network reconfiguration in order to adapt network topology to the communication needs so that total execution time is reduced. By using an analysis methodology based on real application executions, we study the variation of the required communication bandwidth with time and also the global interprocedural communication patterns. Results show that required bandwidth between each pair of processes does not significantly fluctuates, leading to a constant use of the links and therefore discouraging dynamic reconfigurations of the network during execution time. Nevertheless, the group…

Significance of channel failures on network performance in CRNs with reserved spectrum

2016

It is well understood that in wireless networks, channel failures, which are typically caused by equipment or power failures as well as intrinsic features in radio transmissions, such as fading and shadowing, can easily result in network performance degradation. Therefore, fast recovery from channel failures is an important measure that should be incorporated with those networks. Consequently, in a cognitive radio network (CRN), channel failures can cause significant performance degradation in both primary and secondary networks. Instead, retainability, i.e., the capability of providing continuous connection for users must be guaranteed even if a significant network element is disrupted. In…
